![]() ![]() Even though there are 30 missions that only take a few minutes I still managed to crank twelve hours or so into Mushroom Wars, despite barely touching the skirmish and multiplayer modes. There are thirty missions in the campaign, another pile of maps in skirmish mode, and online multiplayer to satiate, though. There doesn’t appear to be a ton of game here. I’m sure touch screen on iOS works well, and maybe even the controller on PS3 works fine, but this felt like the best way to experience Mushroom Wars. It’s always felt right for me to use a mouse for RTS titles. ![]() I love the expansive universe offered in Total War, but Mushroom Wars had me hooked almost immediately. Coming off of a game like Total War: Warhammer, it’s crazy to see how Mushroom Wars compared. The graphics make the game look cute, and this may turn some players off, but honestly it’s a total misrepresentation of the “hardcore” gameplay that exists within the title. In place of long memorization is a fast-track to the dexterity and number crunching bigger RTS games have, but after a few matches I felt like I was a competent player of Mushroom Wars. One building creates units, another is a turret, and the other strengthens your units. Rather than commanding large armies and multiple building trees, all you can do is upgrade your buildings, attack enemy buildings, and in the late game you can rebuild your forts into three different options. Mushroom Wars strips the RTS formula down to its barebones. Between the simple design and addictive gameplay I couldn’t get enough. Arriving on Steam and ready for the PC crowd, Mushroom Wars is one of the best RTS titles I’ve played in years. I’m a few years late considering the game has been out for years on iOS and PS3, but ignoring all that, let me tell you about how good this game is. My eyes adjusted I found a copy of Mushroom Wars in my inbox. Take control of all available settlements and you win.Mushroom Wars may be Small, but it’s Still a FungiĪs I crawled out from under the rock I live under, I shielded my eyes from the blinding sun. Send more of your mushroom men to an enemy’s building than he currently has inside of said building, and you gain control of that building. As long as you have 1 unit in your structure, you retain control of it. Nope, with remarkably competent AI, the computer is probably two steps ahead of you – and most certainly three steps ahead of me.Ĭontrolling your army is pretty simple: target the building which houses the troops you’d like to send into the field, hold R1 and press triangle to send 100% of that building’s soldiers to a target building, square to send 75% of them, X to send 50% and circle to send 25%. But guess what, your rival isn’t sitting still. Take control of either of these strongholds and you’re on your way to an easy win. As the game progresses, additional structures are introduced such as forges that boost your team’s attack and defense and towers that shoot your enemy from a distance. ![]() Some buildings are house-like, their main function being to pump out more and more units. It should go without saying that these mushroom jarheads live in small mushroom buildings. Sadly, there aren’t different types of mini-mushroom men like Full Metal Armored Mushrooms, ready to lead the front lines or Super Secret Ninja Spores, stealthy and cunning units lying in wait to unleash massive amounts of mushroom pain – you just get to control hundreds of normal, unassuming mushroom minions. That about sums up the amount of customization you have in your troops. The premise is pretty simple: you (the red mushroom army) are trying to defeat the enemy (the blue mushroom army) by completing whatever set of guidelines are presented. With adorable avatars like these, how hard could the game be? Right? ![]()
